A young male dialysis patient asked the doctor if he could play football.  He is a relatively healthy guy, atheletic build, no asthma, like I said relatively good health.  The doctor of course said yes and the promptly walked away.

The young man called me over and pointed towards his arm, he had a fistula in his forearm.  He asked me what he should do to protect it.  A trauma to that arm of any kind could be devastating.

I thought about it for a minute and suggested he try one of this shin guards for little kids who play soccer.  It’s made of molded plastic, could sustain a hit and was relatively comfortable to wear.

It works!

So there’s your tip fo the week, protect the fistula but still get out there and play some football!
